Fire Up The Grill: Orange Marinated Flank Steak

Saturday, April 12, 2008, 14:24
This news item was posted in Grilling category and has so far.

My wife is out right now buying a flank steak from the food store and I’m ready to make the marinade and get things going. She found this recipe in Parents magazine and it sounded too good not to share. I can’t give a better review right now as we’re prepping it for dinner in a few minutes. Afterward I’ll come back and edit things and give an appropriate review.

Match all of this with a bottle of red white, preferably a Shiraz since it’s on the spicy side and will accompany this dish very well.

Orange Marinated Flank Steak with Grilled Garlic Bread

  • 6  T soy sauce
  • 6  T red-wine vinegar
  • 1/4  cup honey
  • 1/4  cup orange juice
  • 2  T vegetable oil
  • 1  t red-pepper flakes
  • 2  lbs of flank steak
  • fresh loaf of bakery bread (your choice)
  • butter or olive oil
  • garlic powder
  • dried parsley
  1. Combine soy sauce, vinegar, honey, orange juice, oil and pepper flakes in a large plastic food bag, 2 gallons should be good enough. Add the flank steak; seal; turn to coat with marinade. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, best the longer it marinates. (Can be refrigerated overnight.)
  2. Preheat your grill on high to get it nice and hot. Remove steaks from bag; drain marinade into small saucepan to boil later. (YOU MUST BOIL THE MARINADE AS IT HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH RAW MEAT)
  3. Grill steak 4 inches from heat about 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare (145 degrees F).
  4. Watch the neighbors look at you and wave! They’ll be wondering what smells so good.
  5. Let steak stand 5 minutes; keep warm.
  6. Meanwhile, bring marinade to boiling and boil 3 minutes. Thinly slice steaks across grain. Serve with marinade. Makes 12 servings.

Garlic Bread

  1. Cut the whole loaf in half horizontally, not into slices, but top half and bottom half.
  2. Soften the butter a little bit and spread onto each half, you can use olive oil if you prefer
  3. Sprinkle garlic powder and parsley on the two halves
  4. When the meat is almost done go ahead and grill the bread on medium to get it nice and crispy. It will take on a little grill flavor that is perfect!
