If you are planning a wine tasting party or just having a few bottles on a Saturday night, you’ll probably want to nibble on something while sipping and tasting your wines. I’m going to give you some helpful tips and information on what cheeses go well with different wines.

Tips on Serving

The serving order of cheeses should basically follow the pouring of wine, for example you will want to start with the lighter flavors and move to the heavier, more potently flavored cheeses as you pour from white to reds. To enjoy the softer cheeses (brie, chevre, etc) it is recommended that you slightly chill it. This preserves the consistency and texture. On the flip side, your harder cheeses such as Parmesan and Pecorino should be taken out of the refrigerator early and served at room temperature.

Key to a Successful Event

The number one key to success at a tasting event is variety. By offering your guests a wide array of both wine and foods, you will have more successful pairings.

Cheeses and Their Suggested Wine Pairings

Cream and Soft Cheeses (Brie, Brick, Camembert, Edam and Gouda) go well with Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Chardonnay, Beaujolais, Pinot Noir

Goat Cheeses (Chevre, Feta) go well with Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Champagne and other Sparkling Wine

Blue Cheeses (Stilton, Gorgonzola, Roquefort) match up with sweeter wines and dessert wines, Port, Sherry and Zinfandel

Semi-hard Cheeses (Monterey Jack, Colby, Cheddar) pair with Riesling, Beaujolais, Merlot and Dolcetto

Hard Cheeses (Parmesan, Gruyere, Pecorino) are great with the bolder type wines — Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chianti, Barolo and Sangiovese

Smoked Cheeses help to bring out the spicy, peppered taste found in Shiraz/Syrah
